Partnership introduces MediRover and MediDoc, transforming healthcare for underserved communities.
KUCHING, SARAWAK, 1 November 2025 – CelcomDigi Berhad (CelcomDigi) and Hospital Pengajar Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (HPUNIMAS) today marked a milestone in Sarawak’s digital healthcare transformation with the launch of MediRover and MediDoc, two innovative solutions designed to make healthcare more accessible to underserved communities across the state. The launch was officiated by YAB Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Amar Haji Fadillah bin Haji Yusof at HPUNIMAS, Sarawak.
Transforming healthcare for underserved communities in Sarawak with telehealth
Sarawak’s vast geography and dispersed population make healthcare accessibility a persistent challenge. Many communities travel hours or even days to reach the nearest clinic. MediRover and MediDoc were developed to bridge these healthcare gaps by combining digital innovation, mobile connectivity, and medical expertise to bring healthcare closer to the people.
MediRover is a roving clinic powered by CelcomDigi’s 5G and satellite connectivity, bringing virtual doctors, diagnostics, and remote monitoring directly to rural and remote areas. This scalable solution enables secure teleconsultations with medical specialists, AI-powered diagnostics for faster, data-driven insights, and remote patient monitoring for continued care.
MediDoc establishes “Klinik Angkat” in rural communities, enabling frontline healthcare workers to consult HPUNIMAS specialists in real time. Integrating telemedicine, portable imaging, wearable monitors, and immersive training tools, MediDoc helps reduce patient travel, shorten wait times, and strengthen clinical capacity in rural health facilities.
Through this partnership, CelcomDigi and HPUNIMAS are demonstrating how technology, research, and collaboration can come together to make healthcare more accessible to every Malaysian. These initiatives also underscore CelcomDigi’s broader vision to empower society through innovation and support the nation’s journey toward a 5G-AI-enabled digital future.
Proven telehealth impact in Sarawak
Prior to today’s launch, MediRover had already been deployed to over 30 underserved locations, benefiting about 8,000 Sarawakians. MediDoc telehealth proof-of-concept projects were also successfully carried out in Ulu Skrang, Long Busang Belaga, and Lubuk Antu under the KPT Prihatin MADANI programme, validating the potential of digital healthcare in remote environments.
YAB Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Amar Haji Fadillah said, “Sarawak’s unique geography has always made healthcare delivery a challenge, especially for those living in the interiors. What we are witnessing today is a step forward in ensuring that healthcare reaches every Malaysian, regardless of distance. By leveraging digital connectivity, we are enabling faster, smarter, and more inclusive healthcare for Sarawak. This collaboration between CelcomDigi and HPUNIMAS shows how innovation and partnership can enhance public service delivery and uplift communities in line with the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP).”
Under the 13MP, RM40 billion has been allocated to reform and strengthen Malaysia’s healthcare system, including developing digital platforms for health information sharing and integrating clinics with cluster hospitals. By 2030, 60% of Malaysians are expected to have digital health records, marking a nationwide shift toward connected, data-driven healthcare.
Commenting on this, CelcomDigi’s Chief Innovation Officer, T. Kugan, said, “MediRover and MediDoc demonstrate how we can use 5G, AI, and satellite connectivity to close the distance between patients and doctors, especially in underserved areas. Our collaboration with HPUNIMAS brings together healthcare expertise and digital innovation. Beyond Sarawak, we see this as a model that can be scaled nationwide to deliver efficient, specialist-led care to more Malaysians.”
UNIMAS’ Vice Chancellor, Professor Dr Ahmad Hata Rasit said, “HPUNIMAS is proud to collaborate with CelcomDigi on this pioneering initiative that redefines how healthcare is delivered, taught, and experienced. Through MediRover and MediDoc, our teaching hospital can extend its expertise beyond the campus to communities that have traditionally been out of reach. This partnership aligns with UNIMAS’ mission to apply research and innovation for the benefit of society and improve health outcomes for all Sarawakians.”
Advancing digital healthcare through partnerships
At the event, CelcomDigi, UNIMAS, and Pusat Perubatan Universiti Malaya (PPUM) signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA), witnessed by the Deputy Prime Minister. The tripartite MoA reinforces a shared commitment to expand healthcare access and strengthen the state’s digital health infrastructure through 5G and AI innovation.
Under this collaboration, UNIMAS will lead clinical research and innovation in telemedicine and mobile health, PPUM will provide specialist expertise and validate AI-powered healthcare models, while CelcomDigi will deliver the digital backbone through connectivity, AI infrastructure, and smart healthcare platforms.
Together, the partners will co-develop and scale smart healthcare solutions, pilot connected hospital models, and build local capabilities through research, training, and knowledge sharing.
